Recommendations on Statistics of International Migration, Revision 1

Recommendations on statistics of international migration, revision 1 (1998)

The most recent official recommendations from the United Nations for measuring international migration. The publication includes recommendations on generating statistics of international migrant flows and on the measurement of stocks relevant to the study of international migration. It also reviews the major types of data sources providing statistics on international migration flows and suggests ways in which they can be used to produce statistics that better comply with the revised definitions recommended.

The publication also provides special guidelines for the compilation of statistical information regarding asylum-seekers, and highlights the need for statistics on the foreign-born and foreign populations, since both populations are relevant to the study of international migration. The role of censuses in gathering such information is underscored.
