Big data sources such as mobile phones, online tools and platforms, including social media and online payment services, have become a potentially useful source for migration data. For example, social media and call detail records can produce statistics on migrant flows, drivers and impact of migration and internal migration. Other information produced by different types of innovative sources includes public opinion on migration, among others.

Information Revolution from Data to Policy Action in Low-Income Countries: How Can Innovation Help?
This report examines how policymakers might harness technological trends emerging from the 'data revolution' in order to better various aspects of data analysis and use in lower income countries. Also included are anecdotes of how various programs and countries have used 'big data' to further national development. Africa is looked at particularly closely.
